Hernia Surgery
Progressive Surgical Associates commonly repairs five types of hernias:
- Inguinal hernia, which is a protrusion in the lowest part of the abdomen, above the groin;
- Umbilical hernia, located near the umbilicus, or navel;
- Abdominal incisional hernia, or ventral hernia, which is a bulge or protrusion near or directly along a former abdominal surgical incision;
- Femoral hernia is a bulging of the intestines through a weakness in the muscle of the groin;
- Hiatal hernia, located at the upper part of the stomach through a weakness in the diaphragm.
Hernias do not heal themselves over time. The only way to effectively treat a hernia is with surgery.
Depending on your situation, your physician may choose between a primary repair or patch repair of your hernia.
- Primary hernia repair involves re-situating any protruding organ/bowel or tissue and closing the offending opening in the fascia, or muscular abdominal wall, with sutures.
- Patch hernia repair involves the use of patch material which is sewn over and beyond the perimeter of the hernia opening. The surrounding fascia tissue becomes incorporated with the mesh patch during the healing process, making the repair more durable over time.
The majority of hernias can be addressed with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Your surgeon will decide which method is best for your condition.
